About the Lessons

An overview of how lessons are structured, what we would focus on, and how to get started. Informed by my work as a cellist, curator, and educator, each lesson is shaped around the individual, with an emphasis on building strong foundations and a lasting musical practice.

  • Private cello lessons are tailored to each student, with an emphasis on building strong technical foundations alongside musical expression. Lessons are available for students ages 6 and older, from complete beginners to more experienced players.

  • Lessons focus on technique, sound, and musical development. Depending on the student’s level and interests, this may include posture and bow control, reading music, ear training, repertoire, and preparation for performances or exams.

  • Lessons take place in-studio (off Village Road in eastern New Providence, The Bahamas), via house call (additional fee applies), or on select school campuses. Each format is designed to provide a focused and supportive learning environment.

  • Lessons are offered in 30- or 60-minute sessions, with shorter lessons generally recommended for younger students.

Lesson rates are $40 for 30 minutes and $60 for 60 minutes. House call lessons are available, with rates adjusted based on location and related factors.

  • Students are expected to have access to a cello for regular practice. For those new to the instrument, guidance can be provided on sourcing a suitable cello, including purchase options and selecting the appropriate size. I’m happy to help you find the right instrument to get started and offer support throughout the process as needed.

  • New students begin by completing an inquiry form (link below). From there, we’ll discuss availability and determine the most suitable lesson structure based on your goals, experience, and schedule. An initial lesson provides an opportunity to get acquainted and establish a comfortable starting point.

Student Testimonials

  • “Mr. Shearer’s knowledge, patience, and encouragement made it easy to fall in love with cello. His love for the cello is contagious and made me excited to learn and I looked forward to his lessons every week. As someone who picked up a new instrument as an adult, it was challenging to accept that I would not sound good immediately; however, Mr. Shearer provided a safe environment to make mistakes, learn from them, and to grow as a musician. Any aspiring cellist would be lucky to have him as their teacher!”
